Stories still matter: AdoptedPH welcomes a new era of storytelling and Filipino adoptee voices

The page is officially opening itself to willing adoptee contributors who get a chance to share their story, discuss 

experience and Filipino identity in the diaspora.  

 

But how does sharing one’s narrative any better than what commercial stories like to push in favor of palatability?


Recently, AdoptedPH was able to meet with a number of Filipino adoptees abroad who prove 

that there was more to their openness than what the label speaks. From exploring their identities surrounding 

diaspora to revisiting their roots back in the Philippines, it asks us adoptees who can really tell our stories 

better if not ourselves? 

 


 

Stories still matter


Adoption is still not a topic everyone can sit with comfortably, and being adopted is still considered 

taboo here in the Philippines. Alongside the lack of adoptee-centered spaces, existing ones 

unintentionally drive narratives lacking in nuance for the complexities of adoptee-lived experience. 


However, adoption has no single defining experience. The page’s expansion of format would like to showcase how 

everyone experiences adoption differently, that stories, creatives, and perspectives deserve their own space.

Through your own chosen medium to showcase, adoption does not have to fit into a singular narrative.

 

As AdoptedPH continues to develop its voice, it cannot shape the platform alone. We want to shift from being just a page for awareness to a movement through many.  

 

It could start with the notes on your phone, a memo recording of the day, or even a creative project you've been postponing for a while now. Tell what have you been working on, let's get the word out together.

Building Community for Filipino Adoptees: Reflections from RACCO

Last April, I got into contact with RACCO-7 to ask if there were any local, adoptee-centered initiatives here in Cebu. After finding a handful of initiatives online, I decided to reach out, curious if there were any local plans to establish one in the Philippines. They invited me to their office, where I had the opportunity to share the work and progress of AdoptedPH. According to them, there had been talks of developing an adoptee-centered group for children, joined by their adoptive parents. They were also open to the idea of creating small, casual meetups for adult adoptees to establish a safe and consistent space for connection.
